PRINTERS

If your comic is black & white, you can probably find a decent printer in your area. It will take a bit of looking around for one that can bind and cut comic magazines. As well as print a color (I assume) cover. However, printing a book locally incurs local sales tax. So you may want to look for printers who are in another state. However, this incurs shipping costs.

When looking for an out of state printer, you should fax a 'Request for Quotation' stating the specifications of your book. They will respond by faxing or mailing a price quote back within a few days. It is a good idea to add an additional 10% to 20% to the price quote to cover any unforseen costs such as corrections and shipping.

Printers should also include a price list of production costs that are not listed in their price quote. This list probably won't be included in the fax, but should be mailed to you before (or with) any contract is signed.

Printers that I would recommend (in no particular order) are:

Imprimerie Lebonfon
2523 Chomedey
Laval, Quebec H7T 2R2
CANADA
Phone: 450-686-8665
Fax: Phone: 450-686-8660
email: patrickj@lebonfon.com
Formerly a Quebecor plant, Lebonfon Printing is the big boy of North American Comic Printing. They probably print the majority of color comics on the continent, including most of DC's and Marvels.
Brenner Printing
1234 Triplett
San Antonio, TX 78216
phone# 210-349-4024
fax# 210-349-1501

Brenner prints a LOT of the small press books on the market. Although I have heard one or two complaints about the past quality of their square binding (graphic novels with a spine), I have also heard that this problem has been solved. The majority of the feedback I have heard has been VERY positive. They came in a very close second when I printed my book, so I can say their prices are reasonable, and their service reps are professional and courteous.
Morgan Printing, Inc.
402 Hill Ave
Grafton, ND 58237
Phone: 701-352-0640
Fax: 701-352-1502
www.morganprinting.com
Morgan Printing has been in the printing business for more than 75 years and has been printing comics and magazines with four-color covers for over 25 years. They have a knowledgeable staff and state of the art electronic pre-press technology, and are set up to work with PC or Mac, can work with a variety of desktop publishing programs and have an FTP site for quick turnaround of large files; job turnarounds can be as quick as 1-3 weeks. Also print posters, banners, brochures, catalogs, business cards, stationary and envelopes, CD/DVD covers and more. And of coarse, provides free quotes and free samples of printed material from previous customers.

Rose is the company I used to print my prepress book. Their prices are reasonable, and their production quality is excellent - but I don't know how much experience they have printing magazines or comics.
